The Refuge of the Heart
With Matthew Brensilver and Beth Sternlieb
September 6 - 12, 2027
The Buddha counsels: “Hatred does not cease by hatred but by non-hatred. This law is eternal.” The alternatives to love – namely, hate or apathy – are not viable for ourselves, for our communities or our world. There are many details to work out, but in one way or another, love is the path forward.
During this retreat, we’ll cultivate and abide in the four forms of love articulated by our Buddhist tradition. When love meets goodness, there is lovingkindness. When love meets suffering, there is compassion. When love meets good fortune, there is joy and when love meets the timeless, ungovernable nature of suffering, there is equanimity.
Sometimes, we rest in love, and sometimes the practice acts like a magnet, pulling to the surface that which has not yet been loved. On this path, there is more than enough space for everything.
The Refuge of the Heart is open to experienced and new practitioners.
Registration closes on August 30th, 2027.

These teachers are such a complementary pair!
Their intellect and warmth… and the subject matter is so fundamentally necessary. The teachers encourage and allow the truth of the importance of love & rest to be felt/internalized. – Karen
WHAT TO EXPECT ON THIS RETREAT
ABOUT SILENT RETREATS & SEE A SAMPLE SCHEDULE.
This is a silent mindfulness retreat, alternating sitting and walking meditation, instruction, dharma talks, work meditation, and practice discussion with the teachers.
GENEROSITY: RETREAT COST AND FEES
We strive to keep our retreats as financially accessible as possible. Your registration fee directly supports BBRC’s operations, covering your lodging, meals, and our dedicated staff. Teacher compensation is not included in your registration fees.
As part of this tradition, many meditation teachers (including the teachers of this retreat) offer their teachings without set fees or compensation. As a practice of generosity from the heart, participants are invited to offer “teacher dana” (donations-generosity) to the teachers at the end of the retreat. It is encouraged but not required. Learn more about dana here.
IS COST A BARRIER?
Scholarships are available for those with reviewed, demonstrated financial need. Due to limited funds, not all requests can be honored. Contact guestservices@bigbearretreatcenter.org for more information
